What is your guys opinion on the best locker for the money

Front or Rear? Daily driver? What type of conditions do you drive?
Lockers are different for every situation. The best for everything is a selectable. I think most would agree that ARB is the best. Spool is 100% reliable, predictable and inexpensive but you'll wear tires quickly. Aussie, Lock Right, "lunchbox" style lockers offer excellent traction but quirky on road behavior.

ARB lockers are spendy around $900. Plus you need an air compressor to engage them. Grizzly Zip Locker is a selectable locker costs around $750. OX locker is another selectable around $750.
Spool is around $100-150 basically 100% locked all the time.
Limited Slip is another option. I like to call it "limited grip". HAHA They don't 100% lock up. It's good on road, snow and fast speed stuff. You'll have difficulty getting it to lock up on rocks without excessive wheel spin.
Auto Lockers: Detroit, Aussie, Lock Right, Spartan, Grizzly - These range $250-400. They basically ratchet to allow one wheel to spin faster allow it to corner smoother. It does like to pop and bang at times as it engages / disengages. These are scary in snow especially side hills. My old 83 Toy was horrible in snow with the Lock Right and open front. It did much better when I had the Lock Right up front and spool in the rear. Many people are happy with the auto lockers. They are simple, effective and reasonable cost.

Not sure if Eaton makes something for your jeep, but they do make some nice e-lockers. I really like the e-lockers in my cruiser, but from what I understand, they can be expensive (around $700ish each), but they rock.

Thanks I think I will run it open for awhile and then I will. Lock it front and rear. my buddy had an ox locker in his jeep and it did pretty good

Yeah. Ideally, it's best to get selectable lockers. It's worth the extra few hundred dollars. You might also look on Craigslist or eBay. Sometimes people sell stuff cheap there. :)

I will do that the only thing that's been done to my jeep is the lift and a cold air intake but its time to start doing more to it I will have to build some sliders and bumpers for it and maybe an exo cage

How much is the ARB Lockers and ARB Compressor, the hole hook up cost? Will the shop do it all to or you have to pay labor on that?

I'm not sure on the install cost but parts are about $2,000 for front/rear ARB lockers w/ compressor. You might have another $1,000-1,500 labor for shop install.

Hi Josh - You will for sure have to pay for labor! If you go ARB front & rear, it's not going to be cheap!! Rob's Off Road on hwy 212 does most all of my off road work. You could stop by or give them a call. Feel free to drop my name, I know Rob very well! You'll want to call around for sure! Here is Rob's #503.650.6101 On a side note, make sure you get a heavy duty compressor, so you can have a quick air up after wheeling!!! Good luck!

I'd do the armor first. by the time you need the locker, it's usually on a trail where the sliders would have been nice to have ;)

I have driven auto lockers on two vehicles (Aussie in the Trooper & Lockright in the Scout). I would say road manners are not that big of a deal on anything but snow and ice. You need to watch how you take corners. In parking lots and other tight maneuvers you need to either coast when turning or give it enough gas to chirp the tires. Letting off the gas quickly or stomping the gas pedal in corners can do bad things in any car, but the results are even less predictable / desirable with an autolocker. All of that said, they are totally daily drive-able.
My lockright (Dana 44) used to pop every now and then. My Aussie (Isuzu 12 Bolt) never pops, but the clicking is louder than the lockright was...FWIW.
SNOW: On snowy trails off-camber and side-hills are a real pain in the ass. Ask Mr. Mike. I almost rolled into him trying to dig myself out on an off-camber turn at Trask. However, I am convinced that with a little practice, patience and experience, this one disadvantage of the autolocker can be overcome. On the highway in snow, I have never had a problem with the auto locker.
I do respectfully disagree with Mr Mike, however, on the armor before lockers comment. In anything but snow, I find the locker gives me a lot more control and a lot less wheel spinning. That extra traction is the key point in my opinion.

Definitely get sliders depending on the trails you do. :)

ARB & Aussie Locker are the options for the Montero... But really some rock sliders and trail time would be most valuable!

I am running Aussie's F/R. if you need to DD your truck in the snow and ice I would do a selectable up front. a locked front end tends to pull straight and not want to turn.
I had to drive home with the rear driveshaft in the passenger seat once..a locked front end on dry pavement was a major pain

I know this is an old thread but imho I believe a dependable winch such as a warn would be the best mod before lockers. And for the money you get a ton of security knowing you can get out of any stuck.

Neither of those is a replacement for a shovel, either. Or a proper set of chains. Or or or or..... There's no 'magic bullet', there's no over-preparation. :)

On another note: When purchasing a vehicle, see what options are available for the model you are seeking. For instance, Jeep Wrangler "Rubicon" come standard with factory F&R Lockers. Toyota 4Runners (Limited/Highlander), Tacoma (TRD OffRoad Package), FJs, and Land Cruisers (FZJ80s) offer e-lockers in some of their packages. I found my 3rd Gen 4Runner with the option of RR Diff Lock, aka E-Locker. I now have a functioning rear selectable locker from the git-go!

That's good advice for those that are looking at purchasing a rig and are planning on using it mainly for off roading!! Also 2013 and newer FJC you can use the E-Locker at the same time as the A-Trac! Older models if you engage the E-Locker it automatically turns the A-trac off!

Do you have a website or # for him?
I'm going to get TEN Factory Chromoly shafts front/rear/ not sure what gear brand yet, but 5.13's and see where I sit on price after that. Then if theres some room left, I'll probably toss in an Eaton in the front for now and get the rear one when funds allow. I'm also looking to possibly regear or buy a new tcase. I want something like 7:1 or atleast 5:1, right now running 2.72:1 which does fine, but slower would be nice.

I ran 10 factory 30 spline front shafts in my jeep, the ears got loose to the point that my ujoint caps fell out. they are lifetime warranty, but it took me 3 months to get them to replace them. 10factory is a VERY small sub of motive gear, and there is one guy who runs the 10factory side. He will never pick up the phone , nor does he have a clue what to do with a warranty.
Keep in mind when you are having your gears set up, the setup per axle is around 300$. if you put case lockers in them later, then they will need to be set up again, costing you an extra $600+ whatever bearings etc.
Thats the cost of one of your lockers just wasted. Its also a very good justification to the wife why you need them now, all at the same time!
Also, You should use Dans gears in sherwood for your setup. you will not find a better setup guy, and he is super fast.

Good to know about the Ten Factory! Not super sure I want a rear locker. So far I haven't ever needed one, I think with gears, shafts and a front selectable locker I could do A LOT! My wife doesn't care what I do, she loves jeeping. I just have other hobbies besides 4x4ing, guns, hunting so on an so on. lol. Might do both lockers. Just haven't decided yet for sure. Yeah if you could post up the Dans Gears info. that would be AWESOME! and its closer to me, Im done east of Salem. Thanks for all the helpful info, expeditionnw!
