Even though the weather called for rain, the weather was great (until ~4pm). We aired down at the staging area and headed straight down to the K area looking for the muddy area that we have videos from in the past. The gate to PR trail was closed, so we took FL trail back down to Shingle Mill road and over to the K area.

I think it was KP, started with a bipassable rock crawl that years back we saw a lifted Sammie hung up on. Good sized and slippery rocks. Rodney did some great driving and got through. The rest of us chickened out because of the precision driving needed to not slide off either side or get badly hung up. In total, we ran the KH, KP, and both sections of KL to no avail on finding the mud. It was nice to get out, but we didn't find the muddy mess we were looking for.

On the way back from KL, we discovered another section of KP not on the map, which had a big downed tree having been built into an obstacle right before the end. I went first, and high centered. Opps. I winched up over it. Rodney went next and gave a little more skinny pedal... Nope. High centered. Winch! David thought he would out smart us and take a right line... High centered! Theme? :-) Mike got one wheel up on it and tried some interesting maneuvering, that bent his inner tie rod significantly.

He was able to use a bottle jack and some hammering to get it sorta, straightish, but it was very fatigued and would bend again if forced. He tried to back down that section. With the combination of only right hand turns and winching the back end around corners, we got the FJ back to gravel.

We then split up. Rodney, David, and the moderately pigeon-toed Mike & Tracey slowly drove to the staging area, and I booked out at full speed to only part store closer than Portland with an FJ tie rod... in Longview. By the time I got there, Mike et al had taken apart the FJ, but damaged part of the tie rod end. I found another place in Longview to buy a tie rod end, and headed back to find it now raining and everyone huddled under the ARB canopy. With parts, it was a pretty smooth reassembly.

Sounds kinda fun!?
Mike!! Didnt you upgrade your rods and ends when you went with 37's?

A day when everyone gets to use their winch is a good day! I hate to see things break, but it was only 1:30 when it broke and we got lucky to find parts only about an hour away. It was great hanging out with Mike, Tracy & David as we waited for Vinnie to return with parts too.

You forgot about the fun rock crawl section at the beginning. There was a nice rock section that was at the edge of my rig's limits, so I had to give it a try! Last time we were out there, we had skipped that section, since a Samurai on 35s or 36s was hung up badly and not making progress up the hill. With some great spotting, throttle control and suggestive steering inputs I was able to make it up by the skin of my teeth. That was fun!

Here is a video showing how much fun it was to attempt to get over the log.

Wow, the pidgeon toed thing sounds like my first Git Out Run at Brown's Camp when Mathias broke his 4Runner's Idler arm. Mike straightened out his wheels so it could get up on the trailer and Traci towed it all the way back to Beaverton. Mike waited at the staging area while Traci made the round trip.

Outstanding Job Vinnie and Everyone helping get Mike and Traci back on the road to McMinnville!

Couldn't abandon Traci in the woods with a busted FJ. Oh, or Mike. :D

Nobody makes an upgraded stronger inner tierod... straight axle in near future.
And perhaps a little bigger tires...

Uh huh... Good thing I didn't tell Traci the trip was "optional" for her till we got there 😀

Winching action and the partially straightened inner tie rod end.

Here's all the pics I got from yesterday. It was about a year ago I was up at Mt. Nicolai with Andy, Adam, and Thom, that same big log stopped all of us except Andy in his Dodge if I remember correctly.

Although it wasn't the typical fun we expected, it's always a good time hanging out with you guys.

Yeah, Andy gave it that skinny pedal backed by the V8 and flew over it.
