Let's get the next trip planned.

Date: March 3, 2012
Destination: Trask (backside of Tillamook State Forest)
Time: TBD

Let's discuss meeting time and trip details.

Lowrider
02-12-2012, 07:57 PM
When: March 3rd

What: Trask Wheeling/Exploring

Where to Meet: in Yamhill at Yamhill Gradeschool Parking lot:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=yamhill+grade+school&hl=en&ll=45.341698,-123.185744&spn=0.003303,0.005016&sll=45.339447,-123.184741&sspn=0.013212,0.020063&hq=yamhill+grade+school&t=h&z=18

From there we'll either head straight to the hills on the trask toll road (if the gate is open) or head down Meadow Lake road and access it from the South.

Time: 8:30am meet, leave for the trail no later than 9am. Probably will try to be back in Yamhill by about 5pm. I'm open to meeting earlier if people are up for it.

Stock vehicles with decent tires will do fine. Most the trails we'll hit up are fairly mild, and the more challenging ones, there are simple ways to bypass. Make sure you have front and rear tow (recovery) points and bring recovery equipment.

I have a hand full of trails marked in my GPS that we can hit up and then we are going to try to find some trails that I haven't been on in years. Any others that have input on the trails we do and locations are more than welcome to voice their ideas.

Vehicle requirements: 31" MT or AT tires in decent condition. Stock height will probably be fine. Most the trails we'll hit up are fairly mild, and the more challenging ones, there are simple ways to bypass. Make sure you have front and rear tow (recovery) points.

Who's Coming:
Lowrider - 99 4runner on 33's
Venturer - 92 Isuzu Pickup on 32's
JoeTacoma02 - 05 Tacoma (Maybe)

There are actually 2. One that I titled the "tippy" trail. I haven't been on that trail in probably 5 years. It's down near the prison camp. There's also another trail just up from "can opener". I don't think I've ever found that one.

Trask would be fun. Have you found any maps or trails? I know we sort of found some trails a couple times. It seemed like maybe there were more towards the TSF end. What do you think?

venturer
02-15-2012, 09:07 AM
Ok. Let's do Trask! Jason, do you want to figure out the route?

The Viper
02-15-2012, 12:03 PM
I would be game if the trail wasnt too difficult

Lowrider
02-15-2012, 12:10 PM
Trask would be great for your truck Ethan. The trails are mild enough and the harder stuff all has easy bypasses. I think it would be a great place for an inaugural run in the newly lifted Monty!

I can figure out the route. I know the places i've been before. I would like to try and find some of those trails we did a LONG time ago Peter. There were some crazy hill climbs and some fun trails that we did that were closer to the coast. I haven't been able to find those spots since that one time out. I'll PM you guys the pictures from that trip. I still have them. That was a fun run!

The Viper
02-15-2012, 12:26 PM
haha ur funny...some of those hills look long, steep, and real nasty...add snow to that and that would be insane

Lowrider
02-15-2012, 12:28 PM
you can go around the crazy stuff if you don't want to do it. I did that stuff in my stock height tacoma with 31" tires.

You lifted your truck..... now go drive it!!!

On snow and ice?

Lowrider
02-15-2012, 12:33 PM
well, no. haha. Elevations up there don't get much above 3000'. I don't think there will be much snow if any at all. May be a little muddy though. Again, you can go around stuff that you don't want to drive. It's just fun to get out and the Trask area is a beautiful area to explore.

Hey guys! My name is Joe. NEw to this site. Saw venturer post over at TTORA and followed the link here. Funny, I thought this site was more active for some odd reason. Maybe I got it mixed up with another forum. I've heard of it before..just never bothered coming to check it out. Anyway, I will follow this thread(and future threads) and see what I got going on that weekend(Not sure if I work that night or not). Hope to see you guys!

Hey Joe -

It would be great to have you along. We just recently relaunched this site since the original 2003/04 version. Hopefully, it can be a great place for people to connect and plan trips. The site is still in development so you'll see a bunch of changes coming up. Looking forward to see you out on the trails.

Thanks Peter! Are you familiar with the trails up at TSF? I've gone a hand full of times but I never memorize the trail names or how to get there. How was the site before? Pretty active? Why the change?

venturer
02-16-2012, 08:15 AM
Yeah, I've been driving those trails for the past 10 years. I'd love to do another trip to TSF in the next couple weeks. The site was originally a forum and had a great group of local guys. Then I changed it to a blog/forum and that killed almost all interaction. Now, this site is a mixture of forum, blog and articles. The goal is for it to be a place to find local trails, plan trips and share past trips. Most forums are vehicle or "modification" based. This site is all about gitting out. But you're welcome to share your vehicle build too. Jason, Ethan, Joe Hope, Brad are the other guys on here right now. They are all great guys.

Joe, I'm on TTORA as pdxtaco. I think we almost went on a run together once. Sold my tacoma and got a 4runner.

Ahh I see so I assume you're the site founder. Why the change to a blog/forum?

Seems like around here all we have is TSF and Sand Lake other than those 2 I believe it is a little ways of a drive for me.

Yo! What's up Jason! Yeah, I remember you from TTORA :) Glad to run in to you again. Hope to see ya in the near future, huh? I don't think I will be able to make it to this run but hopefully in late spring/summer for sure!

It was to get better google rankings and provide helpful articles for people. You can check out the previous site here: http://www.gitout.com/wpblog/

There are actually plenty of trails: TSF, Trask, Barlow Road, Stevenson, High Rocks, Goat Mtn (currently closed), Shotgun Creek... A short drive north: Evan's Creek, Elbe, Reiter Pit, Tahua State Forest, Walker Valley, Naches Pass. A longer drive south: McGrew Trail. The goal is to have the majority of these trails mapped and details posted on the site this year.

Getting all those trails mapped and listed would be very useful to new people including myself who has really only been to a few of those places. I guess I'm not really new but whatever. :p That's going to be quite the project.

Not much of a build to speak of, so, not much more to show then what is here: http://forum.planetisuzoo.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=57035

This may come across as a silly question, but where exactly is Trask? Trask Mtn is practically in my back yard, but I don't think that is where you guys are talking about...I am relatively new to the area...

venturer
02-18-2012, 08:23 AM
Yes, It's Trask Mtn which is in your backyard.

Your truck build looks great! It would be great if you made a thread for your truck. I enjoyed reading about it.

Currently trying to talk my wife into either going or letting me go (I think she would want to come). I ride my dirt bike up there a lot and know a few fun places but I am a follower not a leader but know it will be a fun trip. I know that a few people in the area have been itching for a trip so I hope we can get a big group, it always make it more fun. If your looking for a good place to meet up yamhill is easy to get to and will pull up on everybodys GPS. (Crossing my fingers) Hope to see you all there *** willing.

02-20-2012, 08:17 AM
mooresrunner - We'd love to have you along and you're welcome to invite friends. Have them post up on the forum if possible so we can meet them.

Joe - Recommendation? As in vehicle specs? There's likely to be mud and steep hill climbs so good mud tires and a locker would help with that. Most of the trails can be bypassed if needed.

Lowrider (Jason) will be leading this trail run.

Yeah I was referring to vehicle specification. Just wanted to know if there was a certain requirement..looks like I am good to go as far as the MT and locker goes  I still don't know if I am able to go or not. I know I get off work that Saturday morning and don't have to work Saturday night but I am not sure if I want to put in some OT work or not :(

Ok so here is the plan:

When: March 3rd

What: Trask Wheeling/Exploring

Where to Meet in Yamhill at Yamhill Gradeschool Parking lot:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=45.341922,-123.185891&spn=0.001635,0.003484&hnear=Sherwood,+Washington,+Oregon&t=h&z=19

JoeTacoma02

I have no front recovery points :( I'm good for the rear though and for recovery gear all I have is a shovel and tow chains. I have a portable air compressor as well if anyone needs it to air back up.

Like I said I'm still in the air of going or not..if it's until/around 5pm then I'll be dead tired as I work Friday night at 6:30 and get off 6:40 Saturday morning.

We wont' do anything too crazy. Front recovery is not as important as rear probably. Just gives more options. Sometimes pulling someone forward through something is better than pulling back out of it.

Please either have a front recovery point or bring your own tow strap. We've destroyed our straps pulling guys who didn't have tow points. You probably won't have any trouble with mud tires and a locker but it's always good to be prepared. Thanks Jason for bringing this up. This should be an awesome trip! I'm looking forward to meeting you guys and exploring some trails.

Small group of us there are 7 rigs total not sure how many of us would be going. Haven't put it up to the group yet. Just wanted to ask you guys before we invited ourselves along. Pretty cool site. Hey all, I saw that JoeTacoma was going on this and I wanted to make sure he plays safe ;)

Really though, the Washington scene is always pretty slow so I'm trying to pump some extra adventuring in. I'm pretty well set up, but i like to always take it cautious. Overall, it's more about the people and the places you see! If you guys are fine with it, I'd like to join in.

Since my build doesn't necessarily mention it, I have
recovery strap
tree strap
winch
hi-lift
hi-lift ORK kit (but I need to buy the chains still)
compressor
blanket
d-shackles
CB
front and rear recovery points
RUD GRIP offroad tire chains

Since this is sort of my introduction, too, I guess I'm supposed to say some stuff... I've been offroading since late 2009... moved to WA late last year... I'm active on FJCruiserForums, TacomaWorld, NWToys (not so much), and I'm a member of Northwest FJ Cruiser Club (NWFJCC). gratuitous shot below:

It would be very helpful if everyone had CBs. Unfortunately, I doubt everyone will have one. Yes, bring your 2 way FRS radios. It's good to have some communication. We may need to schedule a CB tuning meet to get CBs installed and tested.

I guess two wheeling trips in a month won't hurt my truck.

Edit I can wait another weekend to replace my rear axle seal leak..going to fix it by the Sand Lake run for sure!

I told him about this trip, asked if he wanted to come with his truck as well and I MAY go if you're going now :p J/k I still need to go buy recovery straps..don't know if I want to go cheap and go to harbor or go to 4wheelparts up in Portland. I guess two wheeling trips in a month won't hurt my truck.

Heh I heard Zach complain he was locked out or something... anyway, the name sounded familiar, and I now I remember these guys from some of the videos on youtube that have gotten semi-famous.

harbor has nothing for us, the straps are either for towing or ATVs.
4WP is the devil, you know that! There's better options. Besides, they sell ARB which is kinda spendy considering what I'm going to say: For the money, there's better options. I happen to have an ARB strap, but I read a report where their stuff was not living up to their break strength ratings. I'll get different when mine dies.
My advice is getting a quality strap from the folks at Wheeler's. Also, you support local business and their straps look like they did some quality work. I had Bill Burke check out my wheeler's tree strap, and he was impressed with it. Since they are in Gresham you might squeak in shipping just in time.
If you want to sell off a family member, Viking Offroad I think is still supposed to be top dog in the US... and they price things accordingly.

I wish we could get some of the strap companies the Aussies use :(

So,the size of this group has grown quite a bit. The original trask trip was going to be more of an exploration trip. There are quite few trails I know of but there are several trails I have gps coordinates for that I want to try and find. I'm not sure that type of trip is best for a large group. Could be a bunch of turning around, looking for trails that don't exist.... It sounds fun to me but I don't want to bore anyone or give anyone the wrong impression of this trip.

So.... I wanted to ask everyone what they would think about switching to browns camp area. We could do cedar tree, power line, firebreak... Any of those usual trails. Probably a fair bit of snow up there too. The reason would be that we know that area really well and it would be a much more organized trail after trail type run, less exploring.

Eh, I've been to TSF a few too many times in a row. This sounded like new stuff, so that's why I got interested. I don't mind buddying up in someone's vehicle if we need to bring the truck count down.

I don't think I could do browns camp it would take me from one tank of gas to two and I really don't have that kind of money at the beginning of the month, and with an open diff I don't think i'll have very much fun in deep snow.

My preference is the Trask area. I guess everyone coming has to have the understanding it is 50% exploration. It should be a great time. :)

Ok then, we'll stick to trask. That's my preference also. I just want to make sure that people know there will be a bit of exploring going on trying to find trails and stuff. Looking forward to it!!

my buddy is open to letting others use the quad also so if you just want to shoot up to see if the trail is what you were thinking then that idea is open.

The quad could be pretty useful in that sense. Would make it faster than sending 8 trucks up a dead end trail!

I agree and I will make sure he has a FRS radio too so he can just say yes or no on the trail.

mooresrunner
02-27-2012, 09:27 PM
lets get a CB AND FRS channel established too in case somebody is running a min behind. It will also give a chance to see how far out your CB or FRS will get out to the rest of the group. I also think that a separate channel for the quad will be necessary for one person to communicate to a group leader so there is no confusion on hearing parts of what was said (which means no scanning group)

Mr Mike
02-27-2012, 09:56 PM
CB and FRS channels can't hear each other, so there shouldn't be any confusion on that part.
FRS isn't going to have too huge of a reach. I'm not going to make predictions, don't want to jinx it ;)
For CB, the higher numbers have more reach. My suggestion is start at channel 21 and work up 'till you find a free channel (usually it's free right off the bat)

If there really gets to be a lot of chatter, use simple call signs. "Leader, this is ATV. Road keeps going." "Leader, this is Tail. Tail is just making the right turn at the fork."

Alright, latest update is 7 trucks and one quad.

Lets start out with CB Ch 21, we'll change it if we have to after we meet up and get on the trail.

One big question I have is if the gate is open outside of yamhill or if we'll have to go all the way around the Weyerhaeuser property. Anyone know?

Okay so lets make the 2 way radios (FRS) the same channel (21) then there will be no confusion.

Does anybody have a portable CB that gets out better then the little frs radios? I think it would be better for the quad.

Hi guys,

New to the board and to offroading in general. I am planning on attending this event and was wondering if I need to worry about removing the running boards off of my 80 series?

I have a 30' strap and a shovel in the truck at all times, and have tow points front and rear.

Removing the running boards was the first "mod" I did to my tacoma on my first wheeling trip. Actually the guys from Gitout took them off for me! haha.

I recommend taking them off, it will give you more clearance. Can you post a picture? This trip, however, will probably not be too crazy as far as rocks and stuff goes so it might not be a big deal.

Welcome to the forum and looking forward to meeting you Saturday

You can only use channel 21 on a walkie talkie if it has GMRS... not sure if all your radios will have that. Note that under perfect conditions (which never happens), FRS is good for 2 miles, GMRS for 5.
Also, some models have abilities to tune a sort of 'sub' station, so you could do, say, channel 15-2.
The highest FRS number is 14, the lowest GMRS is 15. We could either bounce between those two, or simply designate the channel once we all meet up. When it comes to walkie talkies and their range, stragglers would have a chance in a million meeting up with the rest of the group.

I also have two GMRS radios I can bring - just fished them from the closet!

If you are able to, i'd remove those running boards. You can always put them back on after the trip. It may save you the risk of damaging them.

Crawled under the truck today to take the steps off and saw that my cats hang very low. One of the things most of the sliders do is protect those, so I think I will leave the steps on for the run. would rather damage those than the cats.

LOTS of snow around Browns Camp today so I went up and had some fun in it. :)

I love your rig, ive always wanted a land cruiser...do u have both front and rear lockers?

Curtis
02-29-2012, 03:55 PM
Yes, it has both lockers. Searched high and low for a truck in good shape that had them, but was hard to find in my price range. Ended up finding one that was a bit neglected and have been slowly getting things in shape. Gets all new leather next week.

Was having the windshield replaced today, and while in the garage I hear a slight pop and then a LOT of under the breath chanting...broke the new windshield putting it in so they are trying to get another one here tomorrow. I should know better than to have something done to the truck right before a trip. :p

Quad is out  i guess he felt guilty puting off his family for this trip so he will be going to his kids baseball game instead. Sorry about any inconvenience it may have caused but as you all know kids baseball games are way more important then any wheeling trip.

On the other hand I'm trying to talk my cousin into coming with his 06 titan (lifted, mud terrains) but him coming depends on how much money he has for gas.
