Competition is tough and these trucks are all built for extreme off road duty even so wrecks, rollovers and breakdowns are common occurrences in this type of racing. It's all part of the risk and challenge of the Dakar Rally. The racing teams seem to have good attitudes even after major set backs. These are truly professional and class act drivers representing their brands well.

I'm surprised ...

This is an impressive video clip! I think this guy is crazy. This Suzuki guy tries to cross a river and floats down stream and has to be pulled out. You'd think he'd quit after that. Nope... Instead, he does it again! This time he is successful and makes it to the opposite bank.

Apparently, crossing the river wasn't the objective though. A few seconds later you see him floating back down the river backwards towards some rapids. Unfortunately, the video ends before his Suzuki rolls over and the driver drowns... ...

The Mitsubishi Pajero has over 25 years experience racing the Dakar Rally. The Dakar Rally a desert race through Africa and over 5,000 miles in length. Many refer to this as the most difficult off road race in the world. Mitsubishi has won over 12 Dakar Rallys which is an incredible record. No other vehicle manufacturer comes close! The four wheel drive system and off road durability of the Pajero/Montero is world class.

Unfortunately, the Montero is no longer being sold in the US. Americans prefer their crossover ...

Ever thought about driving on water? Well... Top Gear takes on the challenge. They are going to drive a buggy in Iceland across a lake. The theory is that with enough speed, power and aggressive tires the buggy would skip across the water. And... It worked! The next challenge was racing against a snow machine. These guys are nuts. This off road team competing in a 4x4 challenge in Poland takes on two large water holes. The second hole capsizes their Land Rover Defender 90 flooding the entire truck! The engine, snorkel and interior were completely filled with muddy water. They attempted to perform a self recovery with their own winch but were unsuccessful. Another truck came to the rescue and winched them out. The driver became known as "Aquaman". Check out the water level in the headlights!

Watch the 2010 Toyota 4runner compete in the 42nd annual Baja 1000 race! This is a true test of the newest 5th generation 4runner in an extreme environment. The 4runner pulls through the entire race and demonstrates the durability of the stock truck drivetrain. Testing these trucks would be a blast...

Toyota finished building the 2010 5th Generation 4runner for the BAJA 1000. Then they tested and demonstrated the off road features. The primary features of the Trail Edition 4runner include: Multi-Terrain Select, Locking Differential, A-Trac and Crawl Control. There is also an optional system called KDSS (kinetic dynamic suspension system). This allows the sway bars to be de-linked to allow full articulation on off road obstacles which improves traction and stability off road.

Honestly...the fancy computers, buttons and switches are intriguing ...
