    Post Trask Mountain

This area has not been fully mapped. Feel free to add links or additional trail info. Eventually, I'd like to fully map this area.

Mr Mike found some more coords for trails for Trask.

    http://www.pnwx.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=6174

Includes coords to Pinball, Gobblers Knob, Viagra, Spar, Plumb Bob, Ginsberg Point.

Yep, go to Yamhill, take Pike Road to Menefee park, air down, take Turner Creek Road west and head towards Murphy's Camp. It's like 8 miles or so of forest service road. Turner Creek becomes something else at some point. Most of the good trails are 1-2 miles from Murphy's camp either east (Spar, Viagra, Pinball) or west (Ginsberg Point). Northeast is Barney Reservoir and most of that is off limits. Haven't done much investigation south. One time I did go south I found some good stuff, so this is a great area for more mapping/investigation.

Subject: Trask Area - Directions and GPS Coordinates

Here are directions and GPS coordinates to Pinball, Viagra, Spar, Murphy Camp and Ginsberg Point. I also have these instructions in MS Word format. If you find errors in these instructions, please send me the corrections.

DISCLAIMER: THESE GPS COORDINATES WERE TAKEN MANUALLY FROM THE DeLORME 3d TopoQuads PROGRAM. SOME OF THESE ROADS AND TRAILS MAY BE MODIFIED OR CLOSED DUE TO WEATHER OR FORESTRY OPERATIONS. USE THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK

It would be advisable that you carry maps for Yamhill and Tillamook counties that shows the names of Pike Road, Old Railroad Grade Road, (Trask) Toll Road, Headquarters Road, Flora Mainline, etc. The Metsker's Map has all these roads. In fact, the Metsker's Yamhill map shows Pinball and Viagra! On the other hand, the Metsker's maps are very dense and hard to read. The ideal option is to find these locations on a GPS computer program and print out the maps on your own.

Before you start, realize that you have only a couple of realistic options to get out of the Trask River Drainage. You can go in and return the way you came, or you can cross the ridge into the Wilson River drainage to Highway 6. Since this trail travels a long distance to the west, the further you go, the longer it will take to get out.

    START OF DIRECTIONS

N 45 20.75, W 123 11.25 - Intersection of Pike Road and Oregon Highway 47 in Yamhill. Follow Pike Road.

N 45 22.30, W 123 15.54 - Turn left onto Old Railroad Grade Road, cross the bridge and go right.

N 45 21.80, W 123 19.73 - Take a right fork at road. If this road forks again after a very short distance (less than 300 feet), take the left fork.

    N 45 22.20, W 123 20.41 - Small OHV staging area after crossing creek on Toll Road.

    N 45 22.45, W 123 21.10 - Road intersection, stay left (possibly straight).

    N 45 22.99, W 123 22.61 - Road intersection, stay right (possibly straight).

N 45 22.92, W 123 23.11 - Road intersection, turn left off of Toll Road onto spur road. Going up the hill, there may one or more roads to the right. Stay left.
    > Umm, that would be a right turn uphill onto the spur road. A left would take
    > you back to the Flying M Ranch.
    >> Correct. It should be a LEFT turn onto the spur road. However, if you go
    >> right, there is a locked gate that IF it were open would lead back to the
    >> Flying M Ranch. {;^)

    N 45 23.20, W 123 23.21 - Left onto bottom of Pinball Trail.
    > Actually, if you keep your eyes open, there is a lower, to the left, entrance
    > onto Pinball.
    >> I've heard this trail is very narrow in places and decided not to mention it.

N 45 23.28, W 123 24.79 - Top of Pinball Trail, intersection with Toll Road. Turn right onto Toll Road. Those who decide to go around Pinball can return to bottom of hill, turn right on Toll road, and proceed to intersection with top of Pinball Trail.

    N 45 23.36, W 123 24 86 - Take road to left (about 500 feet from top of Pinball).

N 45 23.09, W 123 25.72 - Bottom of Viagra Trail. Go right up the hill onto trail.

    N 45 23.12, W 123 26.49 - Stay right at trail fork.

N 45 23.15, W 123 26.96 - Top of Viagra Trail. Left onto Toll Road to continue onto Spar. As a alternative, there is a short climb to the right and across the road from the top of Viagra. At the top of the climb, turn right into the quarry (look first!) and back to road, or go left up to the top of a small hill, or do both.

    N 45 22.82, W 123 27.46 - Stay straight.

    N 45 22.74, W 123 27.87 - Turn right (Toll Road).

N 45 22.92, W 123 28.41 - Bottom of Spar. There are two trails up to the top. The one on the right is the most challenging. If you take the trail to the left, **DANGER** DO NOT CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON THIS TRAIL. TAKE THE FIRST TRAIL TO THE RIGHT TO THE TOP OF SPAR. It should be an easy climb. From the top, return on either the left or right trail down the hill. Again, if you take the right (easier) route down the hill, make sure you turn left when you intersect with a trail coming from the right. At the bottom, continue on Toll Road.
    > Yes, DO NOT head West from Spar on the trail. This is the Plumb Bob Trail.
    > To get your rig back on Toll Road at the other end of this trail involves
    > violating the Warn recommendation of NEVER using your winch to hoist
    > people or equipment vertically. Don't ask how I know - it's an ugly story...

N 45 23.08, W 123 29.96 - Intersection with Headquarters Road coming in on the left and entrance to Murphy Camp area. If you were to continue on the road, taking the right fork through Murphy Camp, this would put you on Flora Mainline back toward Toll Road and Yamhill. Instead, take the 2nd road from the right which leads north. This is the ONLY road out of Murphy Camp that heads generally north.

N 45 23.86, W 123 30.10 - Main road goes left, spur road goes right. Take the center trail to Ginsberg point. There are multiple hill climbs a short distance from this intersection.

N 45 24.35, W 123 30.22 - Sharp right turn to trail up Ginsberg point. If you are not going to the top (can be difficult), continue on the trail. At the top, there is a steep descent trail to the left. Check it out first as it can be very slick. At the bottom of the descent trail, turn right.

    N 45 24.84, W 123 30.52 - End of Ginsberg Point Trail.

It has been awhile since I was at the end of this trail. As I remember, part of the trail was turned into a logging road and you may have to turn left onto it and drive it a little way before reaching the GPS coordinate listed above.

    DECISION TIME!

If you want to return the way you came, turn toward the south (most likely left) at the GPS coordinate listed above and stay left at road intersections until you arrive at the start of the Ginsberg Point trail at N 45 24.35, W 123 30.22. Then follow the instructions to return back to Murphy Camp and Toll Road. You can follow Toll Road all the way back to the OHV staging area and Old Railroad Grade Road.

If you want to return by going up Bobcat Cutoff to Hembre Ridge and then to Highway 6, here are the instructions.

When you get to the last GPS coordinate above, turn north (probably right).

    N 45 24.89, W 123 30.50 - Stay left on road.

N 45 25.76, W 123 31.11 - Bear left (possibly straight). Stay on main road. From this point, you should travel mostly west and occasionally north.

    N 45 25.73, W 123 31.74 - Reference, continuing on road.

    N 45 26.11, W 123 32.99 - Reference, continuing on road, descending.

N 45 26.12, W 123 33.93 - Reference, continuing on road, turning toward north, descending with valley to left.

    N 45 26.62, W 123 33.57 - Road makes a sharp left cutback.

    N 45 26.63, W 123 34.02 - Cross a creek.

N 45 26.78, W 123 33.88 - NOTE: The bottom of Gold Creek, Eagle River and Eagle Hill Roads is to the left. This trail and side trails can be very challenging. I have only driven it twice in the last 5 years and do not have instructions for it. If you run this trail, you're on your own!

    N 45 27.03, W 123 33.62 - Cross North Fork Trask River.

    N 45 27.50, W 123 33.71 - Intersection with Zig Zag Road.
    > Actually this is the North Fork Road. Turn right (uphill) to get to ZigZag.
    > N 45 27.03, W123 33.31. Turn left, cross the pond. Fun road - might be iffy
    > for full-sized rigs. It's a bit washed out on some of the hairpin turns.
    > Other than that it's a good shortcut to the Hembre Ridge Lookout.
    >> Correct again. I did not mention that it would take you back to Hembre
    >> because this route seems to wash out somewhat frequently. The Bobcat
    >> Cutoff seems to be quite dependable.

N 45 27.44, W 123 33.98 - Intersection with Bobcat Cutoff. If you're going to Tillamook, you can continue on North Fork Road to Trask River Road. If you're going back east, turn up Bobcat Cutoff.

N 45 28.39, W 123 34.63 - Intersection with Hembre Ridge Road. DECISION TIME. If you turn left, you will end up at Kansas Creek Road. Turn right, heading toward Highway 6 (Wilson River Highway). If you turn right, you will soon be on the TIllamook State Forest OHV Guide map at the very bottom.

Very interesting post I found on a motorbike forum:

    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=549107

Important Points (all hearsay, but that's all I've got):

    1. the east / north access to Trask is now permanently locked.
    2. the south entrance (where we have gone in) is a popular rec-user area and close to several others
    3. the areas closer to Hembre, ZigZig (northwest I think) seem to be the most "adventuresome"
    4. a couple of the moto guys seem to be against marking and organizing the area, which I support 100%

Here is a link to a google map that I made with all of the information that we have gathered. As I find out more information, the map will be updated. If anybody has any information they would like for me to post, then email me or pm me and I will update it as I see fit.

    Cool. Nice work.

Between the second and third waypoint on your map is where the locked gate was FYI. That was the second time I have seen that gate locked and I have heard from another source that it is always locked.

OHHH...that makes way more sense. I now have my bearings..so do you have the coordinates or rough idea of where we turned off of Meadow Lake Rd/Nestucca Rd/ Nestucca River rd? (yeah..google maps lists 3 names for this road)

There has been some debate on whether this area should be mapped. I want people to know that I believe this area should be mapped, to help persuade Tillamook State Forest to map, sign and improve this area. I believe that the browns camp area is awesome, and that it would be amazing if TSF were make Trask Mountain area the same way. Maybe one day, they can add trails between the two sites and make one mega OHV park. It would be one of the best OHV places in the country. and thats my goal

    Hi Guys,

A few years back ODF handed out some maps of the Trask area for us to 4 Wheelers to explore with, I got one and made a couple copies. I would love to hook up with some guys and do some exploring over in that area again, I ran many of the trails in the Trask back in the 1990's. I'm putting on the winch demo at Brown's camp on July 8th, so if anyone is interested lets talk.

    see ya

Yes, let's plan a trip to Trask. I'm sure a bunch of guys would be interested. I'd like to get the trails GPS mapped too.

    Yeah, definitely up for that.

After the last trip up there, I went back and drove around until I found the trail-head marker for the Ginsberg Trail. I was gonna take a quick zip up there this weekend (since I won't be going on the camping trip) and scope things out a little more. When I was last out there, the crews were logging very close to that trail head...who knows what it looks like now.

Btw, the trail head marker looked very new and indicated specifically that 4x4s were allowed. The other markers that I saw that day (2 or 3 only) were explicitly for bikes and quads only. It looks like another group is currently at least somewhat active in trail stewardship up there...
